Buggy at a great price – Brabus Krawler: Yes, that was a Mercedes G-Class

When the vehicle tuner Brabus reworks a Mercedes G-Class, it usually turns into an exquisite luxury vehicle with an extra portion of performance. But in the case of the new 900 Crawler, the Bottrop-based company radically practices the art of omission. The result is an off-roader that is designed to take on desert buggies.

As is often the case with this type, the 900 Crawler, which only resembles a G-Class in the front area, has had its doors and windows omitted. The body, which is based on a lattice tube frame serving as a roll cage, was clad only very tightly with light carbon parts. Except for four carbon bucket seats with four-point belts, a headset communication system and an off-road navigation system, the likewise spartan “interior” offers no hospitable comfort whatsoever. It features independent wheel suspension, extra-long spring travel, adjustable shock absorbers and portal axles. The crawler, which is limited to 15 units, stands more than half a meter above things. As is usual with Brabus, it is powered by a significantly revised Mercedes engine. It is based on a 4.0-liter AMG engine whose displacement has been increased by half a liter. Together with other tuning measures, the biturbo V8 now mobilizes 900 hp and a torque limited to 1050 Newton meters. In combination with the nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, a sprint from a standing start to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds should be possible, and the top speed is 160 km/h due to the tires. Brabus wants the first customer vehicles of the crawler this year complete. Brabus is likely to be looking for buyers primarily outside of Europe, because the extreme conversion is not eligible for approval. In truth, it is not affordable either: it costs 749,000 euros. Net.
