Consumers spent around 31 billion euros on Burger King, McDonald’s, Starbucks and other chains last year. According to the industry, the increase compared to the previous year is not solely due to price increases. For the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, more customers came again.

Last year more people went to McDonald’s, Burger King and Co. and spent more money there. This resulted in a significant increase in sales for German system caterers. Compared to the previous year, customers spent 31 billion euros in branches, 14 percent more, according to the Annual report of their federal association. Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, there was also a significant increase: here the increase is 29 percent.

According to the report, the main drivers were higher spending per visit. The average receipt was 6.57 euros. That was 22 percent more than in 2019. A large part of this is likely due to price increases due to inflation in recent years. But there were also more visitors: compared to 2022, it was up eight percent. This meant that for the first time there were more customers than before Corona.

Almost half of sales (49 percent) came from take-out from the restaurant. 35 percent were consumed on site, 8 percent were sold directly to the car, and 7 percent were delivered. The Federal Association of System Catering in Munich represents various system catering providers – from classic fast food providers such as McDonald’s or Burger King to coffee chains such as Starbucks to steakhouses such as Abacco or the Nordsee fish restaurant chain.

As the industry further announced in its annual report, almost 3,200 people received one of the two possible training courses last year. That was also the lowest level in many years. Almost seven out of ten apprentices completed their training last year. Earnings in the industry start in the lowest wage group at an hourly wage of 12.61 euros. In the highest group, 26.44 euros are paid per hour worked.
