E-cars now come in all sorts of forms: SUVs, limousines, small and micro cars, everything is being converted to electric drive. Even electric hypercars are no longer news. But now the end of a combustion engine enclave is in sight: the figurehead of American muscle cars will fall silent.
Dodge throws out combustion engines: Challenger and Charger become electric cars
The sound is unmistakable – and will soon be silent: Dodge has officially confirmed that the Flagship models of American muscle cars in the new electric version will. The end is then with the roaring V8, which one could blindly recognize when driving past. In the future, fans of the US cars will have to be content with an emission-free and extremely quiet electric drive.
The information comes directly from the car brand, which now, like Opel, belongs to the Stellantis group. In an e-mail to colleagues at Motor1, a Dodge spokesman clarified, contrary to rumors to the contrary, that the cult models Challenger and Charger will no longer appear with a combustion engine in the new version: “The story is incorrect. The hemi in the platform, as well as this platform, disappear. The next generation will be a BEV.”
When it comes to the Hemi, the writer is referring to the V8 Hemi engine that is currently installed in some versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger. Both are based on Chrysler’s LX platform, which the company spokesman says is also being phased out.
The muscle cars from the USA are, as the name suggests, when powerful performance cars known. So far, neither the driver nor the industry has really cared about what comes together in terms of consumption and exhaust gases. In this respect, it is a big step for Dodge to convert the Charger and Challenger. Compared to some US colleagues, however, you are late: With the Mustang Mach e, Ford has had an electric car ready for a long time that can also score with performance.
