Whether on the side of Yu Gi Oh!, Magic or Pokemon, trading cards are extremely sought after. Well aware of the excitement around this phenomenon, eBay has announced a major takeover.

The website specializing in online sales will launch body and soul into this prolific market.

More than just playing cards

If this was already the case before, the containment linked to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a real boom in the collectible card market. And if the dynamic has been in slight decline for several months, demand remains very strong despite everything. This is why eBay, the resale platform par excellence for individuals, had chosen to better equip itself to meet such demand.

The guarantee of authenticity was notably extended last May, and eBay even teamed up with a company specializing in the process of authenticating these famous cards. But that was obviously not enough, because the American site will finally invest several million additional dollars at this level.

A redemption that says a lot?

This week, eBay declared its intention to acquire TCGplayer. Not necessarily well known in France, this online store specializes in the sale and purchase of cards from franchises Magic: The Gathering, Yu Gi Oh! and Pokemon. The site may also provide other services such as storing maps and shipping orders. The transaction could amount to 295 million dollars.

In a press release, the boss of TCGplayer also clarified that his company will still operate independently once the takeover is approved. In short, this should allow eBay to benefit from an even greater strike force in the small world of collectible cards.
