Buzz Lightyear: this revelation calls into question Toy Story 2

Appearing for the first time in Toy Story 2, Emperor Zurg is presented as the father of Buzz Lightyear in the saga launched in 1995, but the latest film from Pixar studios returns to this theory.

Mentioned in the first Toy Story as being the worst enemy of Buzz Lightyear, Emperor Zurg appears for the first time in the cinema in Toy Story 2. Like the Space Ranger, the latter is unaware that he is a toy and wants to do battle with Buzz. In a nod to Star Wars, Zurg tells Buzz Lightyear that he’s his father.

But the relationship between the two characters in Angus MacLane’s Buzz Lightyear calls this theory into question.

The latest from Pixar studios indeed returns to the life of the Space Ranger who gave birth to the Toy Story toy.

The feature film is billed as the movie Andy saw before he received his Buzz Lightyear toy. The talking doll from Toy Story is therefore a goodie derived from the film Buzz Lightyear, which can be seen in cinemas since Wednesday, June 22.

After being stranded with his commander and his crew on a hostile planet located 4.2 million light years from Earth, Buzz Lightyear tries to bring everyone home safe and sound. For this, he can count on the support of a group of ambitious young recruits and on his adorable robot cat, Sox. But the arrival of the terrible Zurg and his army of ruthless robots will not make their task any easier, especially since the latter has a very specific plan in mind…

The old Buzz wants to use the crystal of the young Buzz in order to go back and make sure that his ship does not crash on this planet.

But our hero understands that by accepting, he will change the lives of his teammates who have adapted to this hostile planet and made their lives there. A confrontation then takes place between the two Buzz.

Who to overtake Zurg?

If François Civil lends his voice to the young astronaut in the French version of the feature film, it is Jean Barney who doubles Zurg and therefore old Buzz. The latter thus succeeds Laurent Gamelon who doubled the toy with the doctored voice in Toy Story 2.

A theater and film actor, Jean Barney is also a voice actor. It is the official French voice of JK Simmons, whom he dubbed in 25 films. He lent his voice to Hubert the wasp in the DreamWorks animated film Ant, doubled Doris in Shrek 2, 3 and 4, the bee Larry King in Bee Movie or even Jack-the-bite in Rango.

“I (not) am (not) your father”

The reveal of this film therefore goes against what Zurg tells Buzz in Toy Story 2 during their confrontation. Zurg is not Buzz’s father.

It was just a nod to the scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back where Darth Vader tells Luke Skywalker he’s his father.

Zurg’s design was inspired by Darth Vader, so the creators of Toy Story 2 continued this parody by having the villain say, “I am your father”.

But this connection between the two characters was already questioned in the 2000 animated series, The Adventures of Buzz Lightyear. The latter followed Buzz’s adventures across the galaxy with a team of space rangers, and already contradicted Toy Story 2. Episode 41 of the first season, “Stranger Invasion” makes direct reference to the scene. from the elevator.

During this episode, Zurg reveals to Buzz that he is her father during a fight. However, this claim turns out to be a diversion as Zurg takes advantage of the hero’s astonishment to regain the upper hand. We therefore conclude that the Emperor is not really the father of the space ranger, and this is what the film ofAngus Maclane.
