BVB wins after the European debacle
Hummels-Traumtor continues the series from 2008
Due to injury, coach Marco Rose has to reposition BVB. The reparation after the debacle in the Champions League succeeds with a little start and also thanks to Mats Hummels, who keeps a unique series alive.
Dull, but effective – Borussia Dortmund has found its way back to success after the embarrassing Champions-Legaue defeat in Amsterdam. Even without the injured striker Erling Haaland, the Revierclub secured second place in the Bundesliga with a 3-1 (2-0) win at Arminia Bielefeld. In front of 25,000 spectators in the Schüco Arena, the veterans Emre Can (31st / foul penalty) and Mats Hummels (45th), who is continuing an impressively long series, as well as young star Jude Bellingham (72nd) won Dortmund.
On the other hand, Arminia ensured a historic negative mark despite the connection goal by Fabian Klos (87./Foul penalty): Never before have East Westphalia been without a win after nine Bundesliga matchdays. In view of the great lack of personnel, BVB coach Marco Rose was forced to make personnel changes. Compared to the game in Amsterdam, Can, Thorgan Hazard, Marin Pongracic and Marius Wolf slipped into the starting line-up. In addition, the coach switched to a chain of three in defense.
This conversion obviously caused problems for BVB. Only in the first few minutes was the goal danger apparent. Newcomer Donyell Malen put himself in the limelight twice. First, the Dutch Arminen keeper Stefan Ortega (7th) checked with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Just a minute later, he headed over the goal. But the Ostwestfalen, who only met four times in the season so far, were not intimidated and found their way into the game better and better. Robin Hack (10th) and Janni Serra (17th) were close to the lead after a major mistake by Pongracic.
Only the gate gives security
It fit into the picture of a previously weak Borussia that a penalty whistle gave the happy lead. After a foul by Cedric Brunner on Malen, Can safely converted the penalty. This hit gave the previously insecure Borussia noticeably more security. Only four minutes later, captain Marco Reus missed the possible 2-0 after a cross from Wolf and a foot defense from Arminia keeper Ortega.
And yet BVB could go into the break more relaxed. A defensive attempt by Arminia’s defensive player Amos Pieper after a Dortmund corner kick was promoted by Hummels, who had already scored in Bielefeld last season, with a volley that was well worth seeing. The Dortmund defense chief has scored at least one goal in every Bundesliga season since 2008/09. No other player succeeded in this during this period.
Borussia also played lackluster in the second half, but had the events against the harmless hosts under control. Even the attempt by Arminia coach Frank Kramer to make the goal more dangerous by substituting Klos had little effect. However, Marwin Hitz, who was substituted for the ailing BVB regular goalkeeper Gregor Kobel at the break, had to clarify twice in dire straits with a header from Guilherme Ramos (54th) and a shot by Patrick Wimmer (69th).
With a remarkable solo and a skilful conclusion, young star Bellingham then removed all doubts about Dortmund’s success. Klos safely converted the penalty kick caused by Hummels.
