As was the case last year, Lufthansa is looking for thousands of new employees. The German airline says it would like to focus on being an attractive employer. The Verdi union sees a need to catch up.

Lufthansa wants to make around 13,000 new hires worldwide this year. The airline group announced that more than 3,500 people will be employed in the cabin and around 1,000 in the cockpit. In addition, around 2,000 technicians, around 800 trainees and around 900 IT experts will strengthen the Lufthansa Group. Ground staff at the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt am Main and Munich are also to be hired.

About two-thirds of new hires in the past replaced workers who left. A third are additional employees. The focus is on being an attractive employer, explained Human Resources Director Michael Niggemann. “Because it is our colleagues in the air and on the ground who are there for our passengers every day and give our brands and companies a face.”

The company hired more than 13,000 new employees last year. Following the complete sale of the catering company LSG, around 95,000 people in 90 countries currently work for the company.

Lufthansa’s collective bargaining with the Verdi union begins on Thursday for around 25,000 ground workers, the group’s largest group of employees. The union is demanding 12.5 percent more salary over a twelve-month period, but at least 500 euros per month.

She justifies this with Lufthansa’s good earnings situation, increased inflation and the high workload that is the result of a lack of staff. Verdi negotiator Marvin Reschinsky explained that new staff could only be acquired with significant salary increases and attractive working conditions.
