CAC 40: a timid rise to start the week

(CercleFinance.com) – The Paris Stock Exchange is expected to rise slightly on Monday morning in a general climate that is more and more akin to that of a summer break as the earnings season is now beginning to draw to a close.

Around 8:15 a.m., the ‘futures’ contract on the CAC 40 index – delivery at the end of August – advanced by 26 points to 6498.5 points, signaling a continuation of the positive trend after the modest gains of the past week (+0.4% ).

Investors, few in number during this period of summer holidays, seem ready to put aside the geopolitical tensions of the past week to focus on economic news, while being reluctant to take positions that are too clear-cut.

For the past few weeks, global stock markets have been rocked by contradictory currents, torn between diverging economic signals.

While the outlook appears rather favorable for activity in the United States and for companies, especially for technology groups, investor enthusiasm is limited by growing expectations of an acceleration in inflation.

The fear of missing out (‘fear of missing out’, or FOMO) has nevertheless fueled successive waves of cheap redemptions, which have enabled the CAC 40 index to recover nearly 10% since mid-July .

The publication, this week, of numerous figures relating to inflation could prove decisive for the trend by providing more information on the Federal Reserve’s next decisions.

Market players will notably take note, on Wednesday, of the latest inflation figures in Germany, then of industrial producer prices on Thursday in the United States.

The prospect of more rate hikes from the Federal Reserve grew last Friday with strong July employment numbers and bond markets reacted negatively.

US rates are easing a little this morning, with the Treasury bill coming back around 2.81% after peaking at nearly 2.85% on Friday.

Trending downwards all last week, the oil market is back in the green at the start of the week, with a barrel of American light crude which resumed 0.8% to 89.7 dollars.

As for quarterly publications, the results season is set to stall over the coming days, even if stakeholders will take note of the performance of some heavyweights on the stock market, such as Siemens and Disney.
