Calculated tip – service flat rate drives the readers crazy

Christian M. wants to turn his back on the Naschmarkt forever. As reported, he wanted to celebrate his birthday with friends in a restaurant. The nasty surprise: “We were billed for the service. Tips should always reflect satisfaction. For a run-of-the-mill service where you have to get up to look for the waiter, asking ten percent is pure rip-off.” The manager of the restaurant feels right: “Austrians are not used to giving ten percent tips . But our employees make a living from it. We point this out on the menu, and if a guest complains, we take the item off the bill.”
