Bigger, further, more direct. 25 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, the newly built control tower overlooks the vast construction site of the Cambodian capital’s new airport. With a surface area equivalent to Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle, it will give the government the means to achieve its ambitions: to try to become a regional hub in the face of nearby behemoths such as Bangkok or Singapore. “At the start of 2025, wide-body aircraft will be able to land on the 4 km long runway, offering direct connections beyond Asia for the first time: Europe, the United States, the Gulf countries and even Australia”explains Chea Aun, Secretary of State for Cambodian Civil Aviation.
After two decades of devastating civil wars at the end of the last century, Cambodia is making up for its development at breakneck speed. The country is banking on air transport to boost its connectivity: three new international airports are under construction in this country of 15 millions of inhabitants.
