In June 2022, we mentioned in our columns the promising project of the Swedish company Candela. As a reminder, the company has been working for several years on revolutionary electric boats, capable of operating above waves using computer-controlled hydrofoils.

In recent months, the company has distinguished itself by achieving world endurance records with the Candela C-8, its most advanced flying electric ferry model. For good reason, thanks to these famous hydrofoils managed by computer, Candela is able to reduce energy consumption by around 80%. In other words, this means that the company’s boats can travel the same distance with just 1/5 of the battery, or go 5 times further with the same battery as the majority of electric boats on the market.

Candela successfully completes its test flights, entry into production is imminent

However, as our colleagues from the Electrek site reveal, Candela has just reached a key milestone. Indeed, the Swedish company claims to have successfully concluded Candela P-12 test flights, its model designed for passenger transport with a capacity of around thirty people. Fact, the electric ferry is now on its way to series productionbefore commercial deployment throughout the world.

According to the manufacturer’s specificationsthe P-12 has a range of 100 km thanks to its battery 252 kWh. Enough to amply cover the needs of coastal transport operators. Furthermore, the P-12 offers more flexibility, particularly in terms of recharging. For good reason, the machine can be recharged quickly via conventional DC chargers (those that we use in particular for our electric cars).

This way, operators can use existing infrastructure of docks and less expensive chargers to charge Candela vessels, unlike other commercial electric ferries which require MCS, megawatt charging systems worth a small fortune. According to Candela, “With the P-12, we are not only offering a faster and more comfortable electric alternative to ships powered by fossil fuels. We enable operators to transition to sustainable, efficient and cost-effective vessels, a crucial step towards cleaner oceans and lakes.” From what we know, the P-12 will be offered in three versions (Shuttle, Business and Voyager) from 1.7 million euros per copy.
