There are rumblings among the Berlin Greens. The party cannot agree on a new chairwoman at a delegate meeting. After three electoral defeats by a Realo candidate, the vote was postponed and the party conference ended early.

The Berlin Greens have canceled their party conference. The only candidate, Tanja Prinz, had previously failed in the election for state chairmanship. The 44-year-old did not receive the necessary absolute majority in three ballots at the State Delegates Conference (LDK) in Berlin-Moabit. The party conference is scheduled to continue on Wednesday evening.

A clear majority of delegates approved a corresponding proposal for rules of procedure from the state executive board. According to the Greens, the previous state board will continue to be in office and fully capable of acting until a new board is elected. According to the statutes, the regional association is led by a dual leadership, which must include at least one woman.

So far these are Philmon Ghirmai, who belongs to the party left, and Susanne Mertens from the Realo wing. Almost three weeks ago, Mertens declared that he did not want to compete again. Prinz had previously narrowly defeated her in a vote by the Realo wing. Prinz belongs to a part of the Realo wing that is critical of the state association’s politics and wants to form a stronger counterweight to the party’s left.
