Let the high mass of cinema begin! Like every year, the Cannes Festival presented, a few weeks before its opening, the list of films in competition. The rest after the ad

It’s the filmmakers’ favorite fortnight! Highly anticipated, like every year, the Cannes film festival, which will open on May 14, is fast approaching. And the information is trickling in: if we had already known for a few days that the jury would be chaired by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women, Barbie) and that the opening and closing mistress would be Camille Cottin, these are the first films in competition which were revealed this Thursday, April 11 by president Thierry Frémaux.

And suffice to say that the (non-exhaustive) list promises to be tasty! Made up of 19 films, it promises a great spectacle, notably thanks to an extremely anticipated film, Megalopolisthe latest work by Francis Ford Coppola, which some are already describing as capable of equaling the best films in the history of cinema.

Back on the Croisette, the legendary 85-year-old director, who has already won the Palme d’Or twice (in 1974 and 1979), will undoubtedly be accompanied by his main actors, the popular Adam Driver, the British Nathalie Emmanuel or again the no less legendary Dustin Hoffman. And could meet another cinema heavyweight on the red carpet: David Cronenberg is also part of the list with his new film The Shrouds (The Shrouds), which stars Vincent Cassel and Diane Krüger.

The French well represented

Among the illustrious guests, we should also come across Emma Stone: just crowned with her second Oscar, the actress has already reunited with the director of Poor CreaturesYorgos Lanthimos for the film Kind of Kindness. But as always, also a lot of French actors. Including Gilles Lellouche, whose next film as director, Phew Loveis in competition.

A big first for him, and which must have delighted his cast: François Civil, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Alain Chabat, Benoît Poelvoorde, Vincent Lacoste, Elodie Bouchez, Raphaël Quenard, Karim Leklou and even Jean-Pascal Zadi all play a role in the film and will undoubtedly make the trip. Cannes regular Christophe Honoré will also present his next film, Marcello Mio, which features his favorite actress, Chiara Mastroianni in her own role and that of her father, Marcello Mastroianni. Her mother, Catherine Deneuve, and her ex-husband, Benjamin Biolay, are also part of the cast.

Note the appearance of Jacques Audiard, whose next film Emilia Perez will feature Karla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. Without forgetting, of course, the new film by Quentin Dupieux, The Second Actpresented as an opening and out of competition, in which we will find unexpected actors, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel and Raphaël Quenard.

Among the notable absentees from the competition, we find Emmanuelle, new adaptation by Audrey Diwan of this erotic classic, with Noémie Merlant, which could still be announced in the coming weeks. Note that unlike last year, female directors are poorly represented: there are only four in competition, compared to seven in 2023.
