Cannes Gaming Festival: the video game will have its big international meeting from 2023

Cinema has the Cannes Film Festival, video games could have the Cannes Gaming Festival. The first edition should take place in October 2023 with a ceremony, then the event should turn into a real festival over several days in the following years. A way to legitimize video games a little more.

And if the video game had the right to its real festival? This is the idea of this Cannes Gaming Festival, a new event which will take place on the Croisette from October 2023. The idea is to draw inspiration from the Cannes Film Festivalor create something that is both prestigious and has an international impact.

Two businessmen are on the initiative of this new meeting: Antoine de Tavernost, president of the Omnicom et Auditoire group, as well as Robin Leproux, former president of PSG and M6 who started esports in 2021 with Espot (Paris).

A festival that wants to become unmissable

The first edition of Cannes Gaming Festival will therefore be held in October 2023 and will consist of an awards ceremony for industry players. It will not be the first event of this kind, since we already have the Game Awards or the Pegasus, but this new festival wants to become the new benchmark of the genre.

It is in 2024 that the festival should take off with an edition that will last five days. In the columns of Figaro, Antoine de Tavernost explains for example that a big parade with 200 or 300 cosplayers will be organized as well as a climb of the steps with “augmented reality”. In short, we will have the right to something very close to what we already know with the cinema.

The Cannes Gaming Festival should be a springboard for video game creatorssince the ceremony will reward the best games, the best scenarios, the best artistic direction… Everything should be commented on by big international streamers and the organization is aiming for at least 20 million viewers for the first edition.

In any case, you will have to hit hard to find a place in the highly contested world of video games. The aura of the Cannes Film Festival, which will inevitably hover behind this new event (which has no connection) will undoubtedly be a precious help.
