Captain America 4: release date, casting, information… Everything you need to know about the Marvel film with Harrison Ford

A new owner for the Star Shield. A cinema icon in the casting. And a lot of mystery. Here’s what we know about “Captain America 4”, expected in 2024.

There was Thanos, whose Avengers ended up triumphing by summoning all the heroes encountered in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the release of the first Iron Man. Since then, the characters have faced two more unexpected enemies: the Covid, which brought the world (of cinema but not only) to a standstill in 2020, then the strike of screenwriters and actors, which slowed down a good number of productions at Hollywood.

Including those from Marvel Studios. And in particular Blade, which accumulates false starts, Thunderbolts, Deadpool 3 and even Captain America 4. The first feature film in the franchise to be directed by Anthony Mackie, the film also saw its release postponed. But here is what we know about it, while we wait to see images of it.

Release date: when does Captain America 4 come out? Where can we see it?

There was indeed this threat brandished by Disney, in the fall of 2022: that Black Panther 2 would skip French theaters if the media chronology did not change to allow them to add their films to the platform more quickly from the studio. A stroke of pressure and bluff which fortunately led to nothing, and the Marvel opuses are still intended for French cinemas.

Directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) and retitled “Brave New World” after being called “New World Order”, Captain America 4 should be no exception. And its release, previously scheduled for May 2024, will now take place on July 24 of the same year. Subject to further change of calendar.

Cast: Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford… Who plays in Captain America 4?

Anthony Mackie, of course. Having become the owner of the star shield at the end of Avengers Endgame, he will use it for the first time on the big screen, after having released it in the series Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But, a priori, without his friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), requisitioned on the side of Thunderbolts towards which Brave New World should build some bridges.

Seen in the series broadcast on Disney+ in 2021, the first African-American super soldier Isaiah Bradley will also be there, in the guise of Carl Lumbly. Just like Danny Ramirez, back as Joaquin Torres, called to become the new Falcon.

Another return, much more unexpected: that of Tim Blake Nelson. Absent from the MCU since his role in The Incredible Hulk, the O’Brother actor will return to his character of Samuel Sterns, a cell biologist called to become the super villain Leader, after exposure to gamma rays. Which should affect another character who also returns. But with a new face.

Do you remember him ? Samuel Sterns will still be back

Following the death of William Hurt, who played him since The Incredible Hulk, Harrison Ford took on the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. Who will transform into his gigantic and angry alter ego: Red Hulk.

In this film or in Thunderbolts, we don’t know yet. But this idea intrigues many people, including his future partners who laugh when imagining him wearing a performance capture suit, with sensors resembling ping pong balls.

Finally, note, on the new side, that the revelation of the mini-series Unorthodox Shira Haas will play the Israeli superhero Sabra (who could be a Mossad agent in the story). And that Xosha Roquemore (The Mindy Project) will play a role which has not yet been revealed.

The story: what will Captain America 4 be about?

As is often the case, the synopsis of a Marvel film remains unclear for some time. And Captain America: Brave New World is no exception. But it is already certain that the scenario will be a continuation of Falcon and the Winter Soldier and will revolve around the transfer of power between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Sam, in a world that has changed more than one title.

Speaking of the title: “New World Order” could refer to several things, including the fact that Captain America is now a black man. A theme already seen in the series, when Sam found himself struggling with his new status and the condition of African-Americans in his country.

Or the status of the United States, now governed by a man capable of transforming into a red monster. If he is only secretary of state in the comic books, Thaddeus Ross will become president here, and the fact of having Harrison Ford in the role will make it possible to make a nice nod to the one he played in Air Force One.

But the new title of Captain America 4, “Brave New World”directs it towards a more literary terrain, since it refers to “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. One of the most famous science fiction novels (dystopia option).

A story which focuses on a futuristic and eugenic society, very hierarchical, divided into different castes whose individuals, artificially conceived, are conditioned biologically and psychologically in order to guarantee the stability and continuity of the system.

Marvel Comics

Can you imagine Harrison Ford like this? We’ll have to…

Or what Steve Rogers was supposed to be, in the eyes of his superiors, in The Winter Soldier or Civil War for example. Brave New World should therefore take up the main themes, with Sam Wilson in the hero’s costume. And this idea of biological alteration in order to maintain an established order is perhaps what will lead Thaddeus Ross to become the Red Hulk.

In this feature film or in Thunderbolts, the equivalent of DC’s Suicide Squad for Marvel, whose release was postponed to December 2024 because its production was paused due to the writers’ and actors’ strike. All that remains is to wait for the first images to find out what it will really be about.
