Captain Marvel: why the sexuality of Carol Danvers and her relationship with Maria are not addressed

The MCU film Captain Marvel is broadcast this September 18 on TF1 at 9:10 p.m. Back to his heroine Carol Danvers and a theme that the writers did not want to dig into.

Higher, further, faster. TF1 continues its programming of films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU – of which we remind you of the order in which to watch them right here – with this Sunday, September 18 the broadcast of Captain Marvel. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s film returns to the origins of the superheroine embodied by Brie Larson and the causes of her arrival on Earth. Acclaimed by critics, Captain Marvel however, was singled out by its large LGBTQ+ audience fora missed opportunity to make Captain Marvel the MCU’s first gay on-screen heroine. Because her relationship with her best friend, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch, could very well have been portrayed as being romantic and not platonic, but this is not the direction that the directors of the film took.

During an interview with ComicBookMovie, the director Ryan Fleck addressed fans’ wish to see Carol Danvers as a lesbian or bi heroine. It’s one of the things we talked about a lot when we were at the writing stage and there was no limit to what we could do. We wondered if we were going to move towards a romantic story with this character. And it’s not that there was any fundamental opposition to it, it was just a matter of space and time. We knew we were going to tell a story of introspection and self-discovery, and we wanted his friendship with Maria to be an integral part of it.“.

A coming out in The Marvels?

The presence of Maria Rambeau is indeed essential to Carol Danvers whose neither sentimental life nor sexuality are discussed in Captain Marvel. “There was no room for romantic intrigue. I know people have come to their own conclusions and I think that’s part of the fun of making these films and seeing the audience take ownership of them.” clarified Ryan Fleck. That doesn’t mean Captain Marvel couldn’t come out in the future though since the possibility still exists, especially since the sequel to Captain Marveltitled The Marvels, hits theaters in July 2023. Actress Brie Larson, known for her committed speaking engagements, in any case encourages diversity in the representation of Marvel films. She has moreover previously toyed with the idea of a lesbian or bisexual character, including alongside fellow MCU star Tessa Thompson who plays Valkyrieherself bisexual in real life and whose character is also bisexual.
