Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to one year in prison without parole. His wife, Carla Bruni, is with him while under house arrest.
A court sentenced Nicolas Sarkozy (66) yesterday, Thursday, to one year in prison without parole. The punishment is carried out in the form of electronically monitored house arrest. His wife Carla Bruni (53) shows her support in the form of a rare cuddly selfie: She shared a photo on Instagramhugging her husband and smiling bravely at the camera. To do this, she just put a black heart.
France’s ex-president was convicted of illegal campaign funding. According to the court, Sarkozy spent almost double the maximum amount allowed for his 2012 presidential election campaign. The politician denied the allegations. In France there are upper limits on campaign spending to guarantee equal opportunities for candidates. Sarkozy’s team is said to have spent at least 42.8 million euros instead of the maximum of 22.5 million euros allowed in 2012.

Carla Bruni also shared a statement from her husband in her Instagram post in which he thanked his supporters and announced that he would appeal the verdict. “I would like to thank everyone who showed their friendship with me when I was convicted of exceeding the maximum amount on my campaign accounts during the 2012 presidential election,” it said, among other things.
Sarkozy “is simply asking that the law be applied to me as it does to any other person on trial.” “I will go on this path, which goes beyond my personal case, to the end, because one day everyone can be confronted with injustice,” he says militantly. The “certainty that this fight is right” gives him the “strength to overcome the torments”.
Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni have been married since February 2008. They have a daughter, Giulia (9). Bruni also brought son Aurélien (20) from her previous relationship with Raphaël Enthoven (45) into the marriage. Sarkozy also has sons Pierre (36), Jean (35) and Louis (24) from his two previous marriages.
