115,000 tons of used textiles are generated throughout Austria each year. Around 60 percent of this ends up in the residual waste. Much of it is far from being thrown away. In the 33 Styrian Carla stores, two million kilograms of clothes and shoes are already collected annually. Shoes are particularly in demand, especially at Christmas time, people are encouraged to donate again: Old textiles can be handed in in 163 collection containers and in all shops. “Men’s shoes in particular are in great demand,” says Beiglböck. Only cleaned textile donations that are still in proper condition will be accepted. Unfortunately, therefore, 20 percent cannot be recycled.
