Rodney McCoy, Carla Walker’s boyfriend, came out of silence on NBC a few days ago. He gave a moving testimony.
He never forgot. The facts date back to February 17, 1974 and took place in Texas. Rodney McCoy and his girlfriend, Carla Walker, traveled to a high school dance party, organized for Valentine’s Day. Both were in the young man’s car when their lives changed. Indeed, a man has opened the door then hit Rodney McCoy with the end of a pistol before kidnapping the young woman. It was only 48 years later that, on NBC’s Dateline, he agreed to speak up and remember that horrific night. “She said to him, “stop hitting him, I’ll come with you“, he first recalled. Afterwards, he clarified that he was passing out but however heard his girlfriend ask him: “Rodney, go get my dad“. A very upsetting moment for him.”These are the last words I could hear from him“, he concluded. The body of Carla Walker was not found until three days later, near a lake. The investigation showed that she had been tortured for dayswhile being kept alive with morphine injections. She had also been raped before being strangled and thrown into a gutter. An atrocious affair.
A major twist. It was only in 2020 that the police were able to put a name on a potential suspect. The authorities had announced that they had discovered his identity. It is Glen Samuel McCurley, now 77 years old. Questioned by the investigators, he had first proclaimed his innocence but has radically changed his version of the facts during his trial in 2021. It was so confessed and admitted to killing Carla Walker after seeing her in the parking lot in her boyfriend’s car. Initially, he explained that he had attended a “argument between Carla and Rodney” and had therefore wished to come to the aid of the young woman. It was only later that he admitted to having “abducted, tortured and killed“. At the time of the facts, the investigators had turned to him but no charge had been brought against him, for lack of sufficient evidence. It wasn’t until January 2022 that the evidence spoke. It’s because of DNA recovered from the victim’s clothing and bra, sent to a private laboratory, that the identity of the suspect could be discovered. Thus, the authorities went back to Glen Samuel McCurley and recovered his DNA from the garbage cans in front of his home. A case that took many years to be resolved.
Glen Samuel McCurley: what was his sentence?
At the end of his trial, and after changing sides, Glen Samuel McCurley was life sentence. Thus, he is imprisoned in the prison of Tarrant County in Texas, where he will stay there until the end of his life. A relief for those close to Carla Walker, who finally got the answers and the justice they were waiting for.
