For months, negative signals have been piling up around the proposed Star Wars spin-off film about the rogue squadron (Rogue Squadron). It would no longer be in development today.
Is this time really over? The latest news around the film project on the Rogue squadron, which brings together the elite of the fighter pilots of the Rebel Alliance, is in any case hopeless. Information relayed by Variety on March 7 indicates that this feature film from the saga Star Wars is no longer in active development at all.
It is a clear reversal of what was however suggested barely three months earlier. On Twitter, the American director recruited to succeed in this project, Patty Jenkins, seemed to give reassuring news in December: yes, she was still working on it. Yes, the project was still in active development. She warned, however, that an exit from the road was always possible.
In September 2022, there had already been an alarming signal from Disney, the parent company of Lucasfilm: Rogue Squadron lost its release slot, then set for December 2023. No other date (to 2024 or 2025) was then advanced. Already at the time, we wondered if the project of the filmmaker (who signed the two films wonder woman with Gal Gadot) would have a future.
The uncertain future of Star Wars At the movie theater
Since 2019 and the release of Episode IX (The Rise of Skywalker), no more Star Wars movies have hit theaters and nothing concrete is on the horizon. Disney’s movie plans are distant and blurry. Given the calendar constraints, nothing will be able to be released in 2023. At best, it will have to wait until 2024 or 2025, because no film has even entered pre-production.
The performance of the third trilogy at the box office may have been a deterrent: if episode VII (The force awakens) grossed over $2 billion, the next one dropped to $1.3 billion (The Last Jedi). And Episode IX earned just over a billion, or half of the first episode. The two spin-off films fared no better.
Maybe Disney is booking announcements during the day Star Wars of May 4. But the entertainment giant seems much more focused on TV series (with the current broadcast of season 3 of The Mandalorian and the arrival of four other works, including the spin-off series Ahsoka) and video games (Star Wars Jedi Survivor).
Additional sign that the outlook for Star Wars in the cinema are uncertain: another cinematographic project involving Kevin Feige (the big boss of Marvel Studios and costumed superheroes) is also put aside. It’s also no longer in active development, according to Variety. As for the other tracks, they are very discreet.
