In December 2022, Prime Video officially announced the start of the series adaptation of the successful video game saga, “God of War”.
This is a second strike for Prime Video. After the excellent adaptation of The Last of Us last year, the platform strikes a new blow with Fallout. This series taken from the eponymous video game franchise has won over both the press and spectators. Proof, if ever there was one, that the American giant knows how to do it when it comes to bringing video game worlds to the screen.
After this new success and while waiting for seasons 2 of Fallout and The Last of Us, Prime Video is already thinking about the future. And there is a project that we are impatiently awaiting: the God of War series. Announced by Playstation in 2018, this adaptation will therefore be developed jointly with Amazon.

What is it about ?
Based on ancient mythologies, the game God of War follows the story of Kratos, a Spartan warrior haunted by his past and sent by the Greek gods to kill Ares, the god of war. After making discoveries about his past, man ends up destroying Olympus by attacking Zeus.
In 2018 and after 6 parts, Playstation decided to reboot the God of War universe by changing location. Kratos, who is now a father, must protect himself from the Norse gods who want to attack him.
And it is precisely this arc that the Prime Video series will adapt. We should follow the hero then who visits the different kingdoms, such as Midgard, Alfheim or even Elheim – the kingdom of the dead – alongside his offspring, Atrius, and Mimir, a former advisor to Odin who was repudiated by the king of the Norse gods.
Where is the project?
Two years after the announcement, we don’t know much about the God of War series. She is still in development – by that I mean in the process of writing. Season 1 is written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man), and directed by Rafe Judkins, previously the work on The Wheel of Time. The writers’ strike, which shook Hollywood last summer, prevented the teams from moving forward as they wanted. At present, no release date has been announced by Prime Video, although the date of 2025 was once announced.
For the moment, no actor is attached to the project, although a few names are circulating. Actor Christopher Judge – unforgettable Teal’c in Stargate SG-1, has not hidden his desire to reprise his role, he who lends his features and gestures to Kratos in the video games. The latter also made it known, half-heartedly, that his main competitor for the role, namely Dave Bautista, would not be an interesting choice.
So who to play Kratos and his son Atreus on screen? You’ll need to have a little patience to find out…
