Cathedral bells ring together in Europe for peace in Ukraine

COLOGNE/PARIS/ROME, March 3 (Reuters) – The bells of several cathedrals across Europe, including those in Paris, Rome and Cologne, rang in concert on Thursday to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people, pay homage to those dead since Russia invaded Ukraine and pray for peace.

The European Association of Cathedral Builders said churches “from Norway to Malta and from Spain to Ukraine” did not want to remain silent in the face of war.

“Europe is burning, we want to ring our church bells for seven minutes on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at noon, one minute for each day of this senseless war,” the association said in a statement.

“With this sound we pray for all those affected by this war. With this sound we pray for peace,” she added.

The Russian army’s invasion of Ukraine entered its second week on Thursday, with no sign of dramatic progress so far, with the main Russian columns remaining stuck north of Kiev and at the gates of the other main major cities under attack.
