Cathedral Quarter turns 10 – Venetian festival to mark the milestone anniversary

The cathedral quarter turns ten. This occasion will be celebrated throughout this year with new, exotic exhibits.

Salzburg has maintained intensive relations with Venice for centuries. Salt and silver went to Venice, spices and luxury goods came back,” explains Domquartier boss Andrea Stockhammer. So it’s hardly surprising that the Venice Cathedral Quarter will play a major role on the occasion of the 10th anniversary. From paintings to antique knight’s armor. The special exhibition “Colors of the Serenissima” brings Venetian masterpieces from Titian to Canaletto to the city of Mozart. From June 21st to January 6th, 2025, 52 items on loan from the Art History Museum will be on display. In addition to paintings, other art genres, such as knight’s armor, are also exhibited. The hope is not only to attract the younger audience with antique knight utensils. The art education program includes monthly thematic special tours to mark the 10th anniversary. For example, a “family quiz tour” promises a playful approach to the museum. The celebrations culminate with a big Venetian festival on August 31st. As was the case during the time of Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus – who made public celebrations socially acceptable in Salzburg – the entire city is transformed into a festival mile on August 31st. The inner courtyard of the residence is also used. Things get musically interesting on the open day on May 11th: Venetian polychoral music can be experienced in the cathedral quarter.
