Friday March 8, 2024, the law enshrined in the 1958 Constitution the guaranteed freedom of women to resort to voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG). A historic day which gave rise to a public ceremony organized at Place Vendôme in the presence of Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, supported by his daughter Tiphaine Auzière, his lifelong ally.

Noted during this event which took place on International Women’s Rights Day, Catherine Deneuve, signatory of the Manifesto of 343 (1971 petition calling for the legalization of abortion in France), took the opportunity to blow the nose of a journalist, whom she undoubtedly judged to be a little too curious from his view.

Obviously very touched by this great advance for women’s rights, the Caesarized actress was questioned by a journalist asking her: “We feel a lot of emotion in your voice, are you moved?“Her commitment to the cause being no secret, it is difficult for Catherine Deneuve not to respond with a lot of second degree: No, I have the flu” she said with sarcasm, leaving his interlocutor silent. The actress then corrected herself and added: “Yes, it really moves me, it touches me a lot“.

A “tremendous” advance for women

Faced with the journalists present, Chiara Mastroianni’s mother also said about this “extraordinary law” : “For abortion, it’s fwonderful“. She then expressed her feelings about the parliamentarians’ decision: “We cannot comment on the reasons why we are there. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here“.”You are not afraid that abortion will be called into question in the long term?“, “Oh well no! (…) We are very French there, when we ask questions like that…” she concluded before leaving.

As a reminder, with this text, France becomes the first country in the world to recognize in its Constitution the freedom to resort to abortion, which is at the sole discretion of women: “This freedom will be protected under the control of the constitutional judge seized either directly following the vote on a law, or subsequently through a priority question of constitutionality (QPC). This is the 25th revision of the 1958 Constitution.” indicates the official website of the French government.
