Duchess Catherine and Prince William rarely appear on the red carpet. But they are expected to attend the BAFTA Awards in London again this year. What robe will Kate wear? This much is certain: everything is possible.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, 41, and her husband Prince William, 40, will attend the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, or BAFTAs for short, in London on February 19, 2023. We’re awaiting the performance with great excitement, after all, Kate will appear again in a dream robe that evening, that’s for sure. For the parents of George, Charlotte and Louis, the awards show is always a great opportunity to mingle with the who’s who of British television and dress up for the red carpet.

The Cambridges attended the event together in 2011, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 – Kate was always able to stand out with her glamorous looks. Not an easy place to start speculating about what outfit the mom of three will be wearing this year. While there were some dress code instructions in 2018 and 2020, this year the choice of whether or not to wear a look is up to the guests.

BAFTAs 2020: dress code sustainability

Sustainability is a bigger topic than ever – and that’s a good thing. While a completely vegan menu was served at the “Golden Globes” 2020, the BAFTA committee is also opting for an environmentally friendly change in 2020: The invited guests should make their choice of clothes very consciously this evening and wear something that they already own or that is too sustainable grab clothes. A spokesperson told Britain’s Grazia: “Sustainability is very important to BAFTA and we are doing more than ever. The goal is to make the British Academy Film Awards carbon neutral in 2020. From travel to food to Branding and material – we want to be sure that we are as sustainable as possible.”

Duchess Catherine wears a recycler in 2020

In keeping with the theme of the 2020 BAFTAs, Kate appeared on the night in a dress she had previously worn. She just made a few changes to it. She first wore the white robe with gold sequin appliqués by Alexander McQueen at a state banquet in Malaysia in 2012. The 41-year-old updated the recycled look with an Anya Hindmarch clutch, Jimmy Choo Romy pumps and extravagant Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery. For the 2020 BAFTAs, Catherine also reinforced the previously sheer sleeves and added shoulder pads. The shoulder area no longer looks so playful but clearer and more mature.

Kate dazzled at the 2011 Baftas in a light lilac gown. The flowing evening gown was by Alexander McQueen, a label Catherine still favors today.

Prince William’s wife combined silver-colored accessories with this look: a clutch, high heeled sandals with platform and sparkling diamond jewelry. The bracelet and earrings are said to have been a gift from her father-in-law, Prince Charles.

2017: She reaches for Alexander McQueen again

Six years later, in mid-February 2017, Duchess Catherine was very slim. She wore a form-fitting, off-the-shoulder gown with floral appliqués. This dress also comes from the British designer Alexander McQueen.

The “Edinburgh Wedding Gift Bracelet” sparkled on her wrist. Her drop-shaped earrings shimmered in a light pink.

In 2018, Kate was criticized for her look

In 2018, Duchess Catherine did not choose Alexander McQueen, but Jenny Packham – also one of her favorite labels. Heavily pregnant with Prince Louis, Kate wrapped her baby bump in a short-sleeved, floor-length, dark green empire dress. She paired it with an emerald necklace and matching earrings.

But this look didn’t go over well with everyone. In solidarity with the “Time’s Up” movement, the US initiative against sexual harassment in the film industry and in the workplace – almost all female stars appeared on the red carpet in black. However, not Catherine.

Traditionally, members of the royal family avoid anything that could be construed as a political statement. They only wear black at funerals.

2019: A touching tribute to Princess Diana (†)

At the Bafta Awards, Duchess Catherine radiates pure elegance and shows an unusual amount of skin.

Also in 2019 Duchess Catherine chose a robe by Alexander McQueen. The flowing white dress captivated with its asymmetrical one-shoulder neckline with flower appliqués, and she had her hair pinned up elegantly. The sparkling earrings, said to have once belonged to Princess Diana, looked so perfect. Her diamond bracelet is on loan from the Queen. Whether intentional or coincidental, the comparisons with Lady Diana († 36) were obvious. Prince William’s late mother once showed up in a similarly cut dress.

It is not yet known in which robe Catherine will walk the red carpet on February 19, 2023. The chances of an Alexander McQueen dress are high. Of course, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an evening dress that she already wore to the Bafta Awards, because this year there is no motto. Color or black, recycled or not – Kate will look glamorous and super elegant again, that’s for sure.
