Cathy Hummels (32) suffered from severe depression, as she revealed in an interview with the magazine "Bunte". "Millions of people suffer from depression. Unfortunately, this topic is swept under the table because it is embarrassing for those affected." The presenter reported about a bad phase of her illness, among other things: "I wanted to be perfect, did not allow any external weakness. Until my body and mind completely collapsed. I was sitting in the car in the underground parking lot and had my first blatant panic attack."
At that time she found her life "no longer worth living," said Hummels. In addition to psychotherapy, her husband, soccer star Mats Hummels (31), also helped her: "Mats was absolutely there for me during these difficult times. Loving, without pressure. As was my family."
Depression as a teenager
In her new book "Mein Umweg zum Glück" (from September 24th, Benevento Verlag), Cathy Hummels writes according to "Bild" that she suffered from depression in her youth. When her future husband moved to Dortmund in 2008, she moved in with him. The depression, from which she first suffered as a 16-year-old, has returned, the paper reports in advance from the book.
"Every new day back then was a challenge, a struggle with myself. I tried to carry on as normally as possible, but actually I just hoped the whole time to be able to sleep. In my sleep my head came to rest and didn't think about it all the time. For a moment I was able to withdraw from the shadows. To be awake was exhausting, to go about everyday life was exhausting. (…) "
"Our Ludwig grounds me"
Hummels sought medical help and started therapy when she was 21, as "Bild" reports. "Bunte" said the 32-year-old, who has therefore considered herself cured for six years, that she now knows "who and what is good for me and how I can be happy": "My child, my husband and our families are my top priority. Our Ludwig grounds me and gives me a lot of support. "
Cathy and Mats Hummels met in 2007 and have been married since June 2015. Their son Ludwig was born in January 2018.
