CDU minister on N-word debate: Baerbock should name the school

CDU minister on N-word debate
Baerbock should name the school

Ironically, Annalena Baerbock quotes the N-word when she talks about a racist incident in a school. How did the school and authorities in Schleswig-Holstein deal with it? Education Minister Prien calls for clarification and speaks of a “slap in the face” for hundreds of thousands of teachers.

Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Education, Karin Prien, has asked Annalena Baerbock, Green Chancellor candidate, to provide more information on a case of racism she has described in school lessons. “Ms. Baerbock should clearly state in which school in her environment this incident took place and how the school management and school supervisory authorities dealt with it,” said the CDU politician of the “Bild” newspaper. Baerbock had mentioned such an incident in a previously unpublished video interview with representatives of the Central Council of Jews.

In retrospect, Baerbock apologized for not referring to the “N-word” when describing the incident, but instead used the racist term as such. “Unfortunately I quoted the N-word in the recording of the interview in the emotional description of this unspeakable incident and thus reproduced it myself,” wrote Baerbock on Sunday on Twitter. “That was wrong and I’m sorry.” She knew about the racist origin of the word and the injuries that black people experience, among other things, through this term, the Green chairwoman had written on.

Prien said of the incident mentioned by Baerbock that the fight against racism and anti-Semitism is a central task in schools. Wherever incidents became known, the ministries of education and school authorities acted consistently. A single anecdote is “not suitable for making a general assessment of the situation in our schools,” said the CDU politician. That is a “slap in the face” for hundreds of thousands of teachers who work against racism in their schools every day.

Baerbock had described the incident in an interview with representatives of the Central Council of Jews. She published the passage in question on her Twitter account. The word she used is replaced by a beep. You heard of a racism case in school where there was a picture story with the N word, said the Green politician. The son of an acquaintance then said that he was not writing a picture story about it. “And as a result, it was said at some point that it was now disrupting school lessons and the school peace. And not that there was obviously something wrong with this worksheet,” criticized Baerbock.
