The world is still gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic. A PCR test is often used to verify a positive result of an antigen or self-test. This is currently the only way to clearly prove a corona disease. US researchers at the University of Santa Barbara in California (USA) have now developed a new method.
As the university reports on its website, the new SmartLamp test only requires a smartphone, an app and a diagnostic kit for less than 100 US dollars (approx. 90 euros).
A small amount of saliva from the patient is analyzed using the app on the mobile phone at to help name of the camera and diagnostic kit. According to the researchers, the test is as reliable as a PCR test, but much cheaper. The new procedure should only cost 7 US dollars (about 6 euros) per test. In comparison, a PCR test costs between 100 and 150 US dollars (about 89 to 134 euros).
