After an encouraging start to its RX 6000 mobile graphics cards, AMD is stepping up a gear and increasing its references. The Radeon RX 6000S for thin and light notebooks are appearing and XT versions are added to the RX 6000M.
Six months after the launch of the Radeon RX 6000M, AMD has completed its range of graphics cards for laptops with five new versions combining finesse of engraving, number of units and quantity of memory.
The Radeon RX 6850M XT takes up the torch from the RX 6800M. The only difference between these two models is the GPU and memory operating frequencies in favor of the RX 6850M XT. More 163 Mhz on the GPU and a memory bandwidth which jumps from 384 to 432 Gb / s. Consequently, the TGP is also revised upwards since it goes from 145 to 165 W. AMD thus announces a gain of 7% on the performances in favor of the RX 6850M XT.
On the mid-range, the RX 6600M sees the arrival of the RX 6650M and RX 6650M XT. The RX 6650M is none other than an RX 6600M with higher frequencies (45 MHz on the GPU), the memory bandwidth thus increasing from 224 to 256 Gb / s. The TGP, it varies from 80 to 120 W, while it is fixed at 100 W on the RX 6600M. The XT version stands out with four additional computing units, for a total of 32, and an operating frequency of 2162 MHz. According to AMD, the gains would reach 20% for the RX 6650M XT version against the RX 6600M.
Finally, two new GPUs come to expand the entry level with the RX 6300M and the RX 6500M. Still based on the RDNA 2 architecture, but engraved in 6 nm against 7 nm for the models mentioned above. The RX 6300M is equipped with 12 computing units, 2 GB of video memory and 8 MB of Infinity Cache for a 25 W TGP. AMD suggests performance close to that of a GeForce GTX 1650. As for the RX 6500M, it has 16 processing units, 4 GB of video memory with 16 MB of Infinity Cache, and a TGP varying from 35 to 50 W. The manufacturer positions this model between the GTX 1650 and the RTX 3050, depending on the TGP applied.
Radeon RX 6000S for thin and light laptops
Like what Nvidia offers with the Max-Q versions of its GeForce RTXs, AMD now offers its GPUs with smaller thermal envelopes. But unlike its competitor, AMD not only reduces the thermal envelope of its GPUs, it also reduces their characteristics.
Indeed, the characteristics of the Radeon RX 6800S are far from those of the RX 6800M. We thus go from 40 calculation units to 32, from 12 GB of video memory and 96 MB of Infinity Cache to 8 GB and 32 MB, and from a 192-bit memory interface to 128. Obviously, the thermal envelope is reduced to 100W, instead of the 135W and above of the RX 6800M. Thanks to this little sleight of hand, the Radeon RX 6800S is in fact an RX 6650M XT.
In the same way, the RX 6700S takes up exactly the specificities of the RX 6600M with a TGP which goes from 100 to 80 W thanks to a slight decrease in GPU frequencies. Finally, the Radeon RX 6600S has the same characteristics as its big sister and is cut by half of its video memory, ie 4 GB available for this model.
AMD is optimistic about the performance of its Radeon RX 6000S. The RX 6800S being supposed to run games in Full HD at over 100 fps with ultra settings, the RX 6700S at 100 fps with max settings, and the RX 6600S at 80 fps always with max settings These new features will be available during the first quarter of 2022.
