While the Zenfone range, according to the rumor nevertheless denied by Asus, would be abandoned, Asus gaming smartphones continue on their merry way. Less than a year after the launch of the ROG Phone 7, the Taiwanese announced the arrival of its successor, the ROG Phone 8, at CES in Las Vegas. The terminal is part of a desire for renewal, the manufacturer hoping to retain the identity gaming of its predecessors, while giving the device a slightly more attractive appearance for the general public.
On the gaming side, the ROG Phone 8 is uncompromising. Between the integration of the very recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip from Qualcomm, that of at least 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, or even UFS 4.0 storage (256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB), all supported by a cooling system that Asus promises is even more efficient than that of the ROG Phone 7, the new Asus device has everything you need. It also includes tactile Air Triggers – more discreet than physical buttons -, is compatible with an external fan, the AeroActive Cooler X, more compact than its predecessor, and offers modes dedicated to gaming. We retain the use of AI with X-Sense, to facilitate the automatic collection of items within games, for example, or AI Grabber for text recognition.
More play, but a little less look gaming
The screen chosen by Asus is also designed for gaming, with its refresh rate reaching up to 165 Hz, and benefiting, excluding specific gaming needs, from an adaptive refresh rate varying between 1 and 120 Hz thanks to the LTPO. This 6.78-inch Amoled panel (Full HD+) also promises a maximum brightness of 2500 nits. All this is included in a case with slightly less pronounced lines gaming than those of the ROG Phone 7, especially since the device is lighter, going from 239 to 225 grams, for dimensions of 163.8 x 76.8 x 8.9 mm. In return, the device goes from a 6000 mAh battery to a 5500 mAh accumulator, which, if its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 keeps its promises, should allow the smartphone to ensure identical endurance.
Asus hopes to appeal beyond the circle of gamers by offering an improved photo component. It includes a 50-megapixel main sensor in its smartphone, with “gimbal”-type stabilization, as well as a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module and a 32-megapixel sensor with telephoto lens (x3 zoom). A more versatile set than that of the ROG Phone 7, which did not have the right to zoom. Finally, we note some interesting refinements, such as the IP68 waterproof certification and the device’s compatibility with WiFi 7.
The ROG Phone 8 will be marketed in black and gray from the end of January at a price of €1099.99 in its classic version (12/256 GB). A Pro version (black only), including a mini-Led screen on the back of the device (16/512 GB), will also be offered at €1,199.99, as well as a ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition, with 24 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage (€1499.99).
