In the United States, a small plane has triggered an Air Force deployment over the capital, Washington DC.
According to the US Air Defense Command, F-16 fighter jets tried to intercept the Cessna Citation aircraft.
The pilot was said to be unresponsive and did not respond to the authorities’ requests.
The fighter jets were allowed to fly at supersonic speeds. To get the pilot’s attention, they would have fired flares.
The Cessna then crashed in a wooded area near Montebello, Virginia.

A loud bang startled many people in Washington and the neighboring states of Virginia and Maryland on Sunday afternoon. An explosive noise was heard. The agency that coordinates emergencies in the city of Annapolis near Washington said it was a sonic boom. Such is heard when planes move through the air at supersonic speeds – which happened due to the Cessna’s random flight.
Reasons for stray flight open
It was initially unclear whether there had been a medical emergency on board and the pilot therefore did not react. And whether the light aircraft had violated airspace restrictions over Washington and the surrounding area.

According to CNN, there were four people in the Cessna about whom no details were initially known. The machine was not shot down by the military, the news broadcaster said, citing a person familiar with the matter. The search for the wreck is still ongoing.
