The Ambassador Bridge, a key border axis between Canada and the United States blocked for seven days by anti-sanitary measures protesters, has reopened to traffic, its operating company announced on Sunday evening.

“The Ambassador Bridge is now fully open, once again allowing the free flow of commerce between the Canadian and American economies,” the statement said.

This blockage has had repercussions for the auto industry on both sides of the border.

A few minutes later Canadian border services confirmed in a Tweet: “Normal border operations have resumed at the Ambassador Bridge. Non-essential travel is discouraged”.

It took two days for Canadian police to evacuate the bridge blocked since last Monday by anti-sanitary measures protesters.

On Saturday, most trucks and pick-ups had been removed from the bridge but a few hundred demonstrators refused to leave the scene.

Police said between 25 and 30 protesters had been arrested.

Washington had exerted some pressure on the Canadian government by asking it last week to use “federal powers” to end a blockage having “serious consequences” on the American economy because of the importance of borrowing exchanges. this bridge.

Canada has been shaken for two weeks by an anti-sanitary measures protest: protesters have occupied the streets of the center of the federal capital since January 29 and several border axes.
