The first leg in Paris a week ago had already offered a great spectacle. And the second leg of this Champions League quarter-final also had a lot of twists and emotions in store. Although Barcelona were temporarily leading 4-2 in the overall score, PSG emerged as the big winner of the match.

The French took advantage of an advantage that lasted for more than an hour after Ronald Araujo was sent off in the 29th minute. With the score at 1:3, the Catalans tried everything again with ten men in their home Olympic Stadium to force extra time.

Mbappé strikes twice

But Kylian Mbappé finally dashed all hopes with a 4-1 win in the 89th minute. The superstar had already made it 3-1 from the penalty point after Joao Cancelo was too rustic in the penalty area against Ousmane Dembélé (61′).

Before that, events had happened rapidly:

  • 54th minute: Vitinha, who had already scored in the first leg, had far too much space after a corner and scored with a well-placed low shot to make it 2-1 for the guests.
  • 55th minute: Ilkay Gündogan almost succeeds in the immediate reaction, but he fails at the outside post.
  • 56th minute: Barça coach Xavi loses his nerve in the coaching zone and after his tirade has to watch the rest of the game from the stands.

It was the definitive turning point in a game that the Spaniards had had under control at the start and after Raphinha’s early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, but which had already slipped away from them during the course of the first half.

Barcola’s nomination is worth it

In contrast to the first leg, PSG coach Luis Enrique relied on Bradley Barcola on offense from the start. A measure that more than paid off. The 21-year-old Frenchman repeatedly and successfully confused the Barça defense:

PSG is in the semi-finals of the “premier class” for the first time since 2021. The opponent there is Borussia Dortmund, who prevailed against Atletico Madrid with an overall score of 5:4.
