  • Manchester City wins the round of 16 second leg in the Champions League against RB Leipzig 7-0 (first leg 1-1) and is in the quarter-finals.
  • City striker Erling Haaland delivers a top-class show and netted 5 goals.
  • In the other round of 16 on Tuesday evening, Inter Milan handed a 0-0 draw in Porto to progress.

After a good hour, Erling Haaland left the pitch at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester to thunderous applause from the spectators. The Norwegian was rightly celebrated. With 5 goals, he had previously shot down Leipzig practically single-handedly. Already in the first half he had managed a flawless hat-trick. After the break, Haaland scored two more goals.

5 goals in a Champions League game – only two players have managed this feat before: Lionel Messi (2012 with Barcelona against Leverkusen) and Luiz Adriano (2014 with Shakhtar Donetsk against BATE Borisov).

Leipzig already served at the break

After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, which Leipzig earned almost 3 weeks ago with a strong second half, the “Bulls” had legitimate hopes of reaching the second quarter-finals in the club’s history before the guest appearance in Manchester. After a good 20 minutes, these hopes suffered a severe setback within 78 seconds:

The Norwegian’s thirst for goals was not yet satisfied. Before the break (45+2) he made his hat trick perfect with the 3rd goal. After a corner kick, he pushed the ball over the line after Ruben Dias had headed the post. City took a 3-0 lead in the break, the fair was as good as read.

It’s not just Haaland that doesn’t have enough

But things got even worse for Leipzig. Shortly after the restart, Ilkay Gündogan increased the lead to 4-0 after a wonderful attack over several stops by goalkeeper Ederson. Before Haaland was substituted in the 63rd minute, the Norwegian scored his goals 4 and 5 that evening.

The best goal of the evening at the “Citizens” show, in which Manuel Akanji played through in central defence, was De Bruyne’s account. The Belgian made the end of the game with a wonderful long-range shot from outside the penalty area.

Leipzig isn’t the only Bundesliga club to lose to such an extent in Manchester. In 2019, Schalke did not fare any better in the round of 16. After a 2:3 defeat in the first leg, the «Knappen» also lost 0:7 away. At that time, City had 6 players on the top scorer list, only Sergio Aguero scored twice.
