Sommer’s “exciting journey” at FC Bayern is over

Yann Sommer said goodbye to FC Bayern Munich after a few months and switched to Inter Milan. The goalkeeper wants to save his goals, the German record champions have to sort out his goalkeeping puzzle.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer leaves FC Bayern after around seven months and, as expected, joins the Italian first division club Inter Milan. According to media reports, the Munich team will receive around six million euros for the 34-year-old. The Italian Champions League finalist had been looking for a new number 1 in goal since André Onana’s departure.

On Instagram, Sommer wrote before the official announcement that an “exciting journey” was coming to an end. He also thanked his teammates, coaches, support staff and fans of FC Bayern, “who made my time at this big club an experience I will never forget.”

During the winter break, Sommer came from Borussia Mönchengladbach for around nine million euros to replace the injured Manuel Neuer and was given a contract until mid-2025. During his flying visit, the Swiss goalkeeper appeared on the pitch in 25 games. He conceded 31 goals and kept eight clean sheets. There were no really big mistakes, but Sommer never radiated the sovereignty of Neuer.

“We understand Yann Sommer’s wish”

The 34-year-old had pushed for a farewell as his personal ambitions were not compatible with Neuer’s imminent return. The EM 2024 in Germany is Sommer’s big goal, which he doesn’t want to jeopardize with a reserve role and a lack of match practice. “We understand and respect Yann Sommer’s desire to seek a new challenge at Inter Milan because he wants to be the number 1 goalkeeper in the long term,” said Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Bayern now have to intensify their search for a goalkeeper. Neuer is still training individually and will miss the start of the season. Sven Ulreich was in goal in the friendly win against AS Monaco on Monday. David de Gea without a club and Brentford’s David Raya are said to still be at the top of the Munich transfer task force’s list.
