Charente-Maritime: a prison supervisor attacked

A supervisor at Saint-Martin-de-Ré prison was assaulted. She had just discovered “forbidden” items in a prisoner’s cell.

This Wednesday, December 22, the prison supervisor carried out a classic cell search before coming across several objects prohibited in the prison environment: a phone and its charger as well as a USB key, phone cards and cannabis.

Seeing his phone being taken from him, the inmate reacted violently by throwing the supervisor to the ground and twisting her arm. It did not take long for the guards to master the individual.

Following this assault, the supervisor was prescribed eight days of Temporary Incapacity for Work (ITT), and the detainee was placed in a disciplinary unit.

A violent climate within the prison

The attacker will have to go to a disciplinary commission and the investigation was entrusted to the gendarmerie of Saint-Martin-de-Ré.

It is not yet clear what is in the phone, but its presence combined with that of cannabis in the cell could be a sign that narcotics trafficking could take place within the prison.

For their part, the guards appealed to their union to demand that the detainee be punished accordingly. Moreover, this is not the first time that a supervisor has been assaulted in this remand center. Since the start of 2021, sixteen assaults have been observed.

“This is the sixteenth assault of the year in Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Our colleague is very shocked, besides his injuries. We ask for the transfer of this detainee as soon as possible, ”said Ludovic Lillo, head of the FO-Justice union.
