Kia has just announced via a press release that its next EV9 electric car will feature Plug & Charge technology. This will allow the driver to recharge the vehicle directly by plugging it into a terminal, without having to present their badge at the terminal. The technology will be compatible with Ionity and BP terminals.
In recent years, Plug & Charge technology has been making waves again, particularly thanks to their arrival on the Ionity network. While Tesla Superchargers have been providing this to their customers for more than 10 years now, other motorists can finally discover the pleasure of going to a terminal and directly plugging in their vehicle, without having to present their badge to identify themselves. In fact, this directly identifies the vehicle and automatically links it to the driver’s contract, which allows charging to be started without delay.
Since Ionity now offers this functionality, network partner manufacturers can start embedding it in their cars. This is precisely what Kia is preparing to do with the launch of its next electric SUV, the Kia EV9. The latter will be the first from the firm to feature Plug & Charge, but will soon be followed by other models such as the EV5 and the EV6, as the manufacturer explains in a press release.

Since Kia is one of the partner manufacturers of the Ionity network alongside Mercedes, Ford and Volkswagen, Plug & Charge technology will therefore work at all terminals on the network. But the manufacturer also specifies that the BP stations will also be able to accommodate the busiest EV9 drivers.
“By offering our customers cutting-edge electric vehicles and charging solutions, we intend to facilitate the transition to sustainable mobility, and position ourselves as serious competitors in the extremely competitive EV market in Europe,” said Sjoerd Knipping, Vice President of Marketing and Product at Kia Europe. Note that the EV9 will also be entitled to level 2 autonomous driving and a route planner.
