Charts USA: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 flies over the month of October

No need to prolong the suspense unnecessarily for a game which we already know has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide between October 20 and 31. It is obvious that the United States represents a significant portion of this success, to the point that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is not just the best seller of October, it has already risen to 4th place among the best-selling games since start of the year, ahead of titles like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Starfield and Resident Evil 4. In dollars, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is off to a better start than its predecessor released in September 2018, which was at its time the most big launch in the history of PlayStation Studios games. This comparison in value is however ambiguous, on the one hand because the PS5 game is sold 10 dollars more than the PS4 game at the time, and on the other hand because the 2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man was released on the 7th of month, instead of 20 for his successor. In short, the mission is in any case easily accomplished for Insomniac Games.

Another big release of the month, Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes second place in the ranking, but is surprising by its absence in the annual top 20. Precision provided by Mat Piscatella, the plumber only missed the ranking by one step and is therefore in 21st place. We are not too worried about Nintendo, whose game will not fail to exploit its full commercial potential in November as well as in December, when the time will come to look for the ideal gift. As usual, let’s remember that Nintendo games are penalized in this ranking due to not being willing to share eShop sales with Circana.

Alongside the United States of Spider-Man and Japan of Mario, it is France which takes a place on the podium with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Globally, Ubisoft said the game’s launch was comparable to Origins and Odyssey in terms of player numbers. We don’t yet know if this will be enough for Ubisoft, but this is the second launch that the publisher considers satisfactory in recent months after The Crew Motorfest and while waiting to see how Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora does in December.

At Electronic Arts, UFC 5 and NHL 24 start in the top 10 and join Madden NFL 24 and EA Sports FC 24 to form a large sports collective… which could even have included EA Sports WRC in addition if it were not not released on October 31 (this ranking ends on October 28). Sonic Superstars and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1 will be satisfied with 9th and 12th place, not to mention Forza Motorsport which for its big return does not do better than 17th. Note that Lords of the Fallen’s 20th place is misleading because it does not include download sales.

In terms of console sales, the strong software activity in October did not necessarily have the expected effect: the three consoles are down compared to the same month a year earlier, even the PS5 which nevertheless retains the leading sales in volume and value. For October, second place goes to the Switch in volume (the number of copies sold) but to the Xbox Series in value (turnover). In dollar terms, all current-gen consoles saw a double-digit decline in sales compared to the previous year. Console sales since the start of the year, however, remain up 6% compared to the same period in 2022. As for accessories, they are still led by the DualSense Midnight Black controller. Waiting for PlayStation Portal to create a surprise in November?
