ChatGPT is down, pro-Russian hackers announce they have brought down the chatbot

For approximately 2 hours, ChatGPT has no longer been able to respond to its users’ requests. A group of hackers has claimed responsibility for an operation against OpenAI’s chatbot. The latter would have fallen following a DDOS attack, damaging the platform’s servers. Its creators confirmed the technical failure, but not the cyberattack.

If you have a question for ChatGPT, you may have to wait a little while before you can ask it. Indeed, at the end of the day, several users reported on social networks that the chatbot had broken down. Unable to make a request, he refuses to respond. For our part, we tried to go to the platform and were not confronted with any particular technical problems.

However, OpenAI does indeed indicate on its site that its artificial intelligence is currently experiencing a major outage for almost 2 hours. It therefore seems that the concern is not widespread. However, it could be that we already know the culprits of this situation. As our colleagues from Numerama indicate, the hacker group Anonymous Sudan today claimed responsibility for a DDOS attack against ChatGPT.

ChatGPT goes through turbulence after potential DDOS attack

Anonymous Sudan describes itself as a collective of hacktivists acting on behalf of Russia and close to the Islamist movement. In their press release, they explain that they are responsible for the current outage, listing all the malfunctions caused by their cyberattack. For now, OpenAI has not yet confirmed that it was the target of hackers.

When we asked ChatGPT if it was down, it said no. We then tried to tell him that press articles mention a cyberattack carried out by Anonymous Sudan. Here is what the chatbot told us:

“IIt is possible that computer systems, including those that support me, may be subject to cyberattacks from time to time. Organizations responsible for managing these systems typically take steps to strengthen their security and protect the data. »
