OpenAI, the publisher of ChatGPT, no longer wants to push users of its conversational robot to identify themselves to use it. A novelty gradually deployed around the world.

OpenAI’s latest announcement regarding ChatGPT is not an April Fool’s joke. Precision is essential, because the communication is so surprising. But the American publisher supported by Microsoft confirmed it on Monday: the use of the free version of the chatbot is gradually being opened without prior registration or provision of personal data. Does it really work?

OpenAI stops requiring registration for ChatGPT users

Until now, to be able to use ChatGPT for free (version 3.5 of the GPT model), you had to create an account. The process is, it must be said, quite tedious.

You must first enter an email and then a password. Then, the time comes to confirm the account by giving your name, first name(s), date of birth then telephone number, to be able to enter a code and verify that you are a human being, and not a robot ready for all the abuse.

Many people questioned this collection of personal data, without really or precisely knowing what it can be used for. But ” It is at the heart of our mission to make tools like ChatGPT widely available so that people can experience the benefits of AI », explains OpenAI, to justify its change of mindset (mindset).

The French will have to wait a little longer

From now on (Editor’s note: Monday)you can use ChatGPT instantly, without the need to register », Explains the American company in a blog post. If it explains that creating an account offers some significant advantages, such as the possibility of recording and consulting your conversation history or sharing them, among other functionalities, OpenAI assumes this change of direction.

So can we French people use ChatGPT without registering with OpenAI? For the moment, no, we have done the test, and those who want to skip the step of creating an account to use the chatbot will have to wait a few more days, or even a few weeks.

On the other hand, and while waiting for deployment in the 185 countries that use ChatGPT, it is possible to take advantage of it by using a VPN, by choosing an American address. The method works, yes, while waiting for better.
