ÖKO-TEST tested 20 types of cat litter in a current issue. The test winner is a cheap product from the discounter Lidl. We’ll tell you which products the experts also recommend for your house cat.
It should be absorbent, generate little dust and ensure that it doesn’t smell like strict cat pee. If a cat litter meets all of these criteria, it will make cat owners happy. The magazine ÖKO-TEST (Issue 1/2022) has tested 20 cat litter products – and can recommend half of them.
Above all, there are shortcomings: Deficits in odor retention and absorbency in clumping litter based on wood or plant fibers. The eco testers praise the sustainability in production, but also find that clumping litter made from clay minerals is clearly more absorbent. Also, if the litter did not clump, it was more difficult to remove contaminants – in the test, residues were usually left on the litter box.
Lidl is the test winner
Nine types of cat litter scored “good” in the test. Only one product can secure the top rating of “very good”: The Test winner is this Coshida cat litter clumping ultra white from Lidl for around 2.75 euros for 6 liters.
The following lumpy types of cat litter score “good” in the test and are also real price tips:
- Cachet Classic Ultra cat litter by Aldi (2.75 euros / 6 liters)
- Finé Premium clumping litter natural white from net (2.75 euros / 6 liters)
- Yes! Cats clumping litter from Rewe (2.99 euros / 10 kg)
- Lucky Cat clumping litter by Penny (1.99 euros / 10 kg)
- Mieze Katz clumping litter compact natural light by Norma (2.75 euros / 7 liters)
The rest of the tested types of cat litter are not really bad, but do not go beyond “satisfactory”.
