Cheeky cheating with smartwatches: This is how Samsung, Apple and Co.

SAMSUNG GALAXY WATCH 5 (PRO)

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is thicker than Samsung claims in the spec sheet. A YouTube video shows that the manufacturer isn’t the only one fibbing about the specs of its smartwatch.

In the press materials, Samsung specifies the dimensions of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro as 45.4 x 45.4 x 10.5 millimeters. However, the smartwatch from the South Korean manufacturer is not as thin as advertised – as a comparison photo by Reddit user cbelliott shows.

It pits the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro against the Garmin Venu 2 Plus. According to the data sheet, this should be 12.6 millimeters thick, but it looks much slimmer than the Samsung watch in the picture. How is that possible?

Manufacturers indicate the thinnest point

Well, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is actually almost 15 millimeters thick, as YouTuber DC Rainmaker shows in a video. The discrepancy between Samsung’s specification and the actual thickness is due to the measurement method.

According to DC Rainmaker, Samsung ignores the back of the watch and protruding elements such as the heart rate sensor when measuring. Instead, only the thickness of the frame is measured. Samsung is not alone with this trick, Rainmaker was also able to determine corresponding deviations from Apple, Garmin and other manufacturers, only Fitbit shows the thickness correctly.

He finds this particularly problematic, since there is usually no information on the measurement method on the manufacturer’s website, so that it is not clear to you before you buy that the product is sometimes thicker. After all, Samsung no longer provides any information on the thickness of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro on the German website.
