Derek Chauvin is sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. Many US stars see the sentence with mixed feelings.

Has justice been done in the case of the slain African American George Floyd (1973-2020)? Various US stars disagree on the sentence for Derek Chauvin (45). The ex-cop, who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for almost ten minutes in April of last year until he could no longer breathe, was sentenced by the Minnesota court to 22.5 years in prison for murder. In the social networks, millions of people reacted, partly relieved and partly dissatisfied, in view of the judge’s verdict, including Cher (75), Alyssa Milano (48) and Billy Porter (51).

Alyssa Milano and George Takei are disappointed

“Pose” star Porter only retweeted the sentence, without personal evaluation: “22.5 years”. “Charmed” actress Milano, on the other hand, became clearer what she thought of it: “22.5 years is not long enough.” Kathy Griffin (60) shares this opinion with her words: “Of course this is not long enough.”

Even before the sentence was announced wrote about “Star Trek” legend George Takei (84): “I’m calling for 40 years for Chauvin. George Floyd’s family received a life sentence when Chauvin murdered him.” The 40 years imprisonment would have been possible as the ex-cop was found guilty of second degree murder.

Compassion for loved ones

Singer Cher expresses sympathy for those on both sides. she writes: “I understand Chauvin’s mother, who doesn’t want her son locked up,” said the 75-year-old, who then continues in capital letters: “But George Floyd’s mother will ‘never’ see her son again.” Also actress Rosanna Arquette (61) takes a position on this and writes: “I’m sorry, Mother Chauvin, but your son is NOT a good man.”

US author Roxane Gay (46) best sums up the dichotomy that many people have in view of the judgment. At first, she seemed content with Chauvin’s 270 months in jail. Then she put her first feeling into perspective with the words: “It is a mixed emotional response because it is so rare for a police officer to receive such a sentence. But I do not believe that there can be a satisfactory or acceptable level of punishment for such a crime.”
