Chevaline slaughter: the investigation bounces back nine years later, what can we expect from the new police custody?

In September 2012, three members of the same family were found dead in a car on a forest road in Haute-Savoie. To date, no suspect has been arrested, while the investigation has just taken a new turn with police custody.

The mystery remains unresolved despite a rebound. On September 5, 2012, a British cyclist named Brett Martin, a former soldier in the Royal Air Force, arrives at a forest parking lot on the heights of Lake Annecy, near the village of Chevaline, in Haute-Savoie. There, he discovers a macabre scene in a BMW station wagon registered in Great Britain, whose engine is still running: the lifeless bodies of Saad al-Hilli, 50, British engineer, his wife Iqbal, 47, dentist, alive in Claygate, West London and his 74-year-old mother-in-law.

Killed several times in the head, they do not seem to have any connection with Sylvain Mollier, a cyclist whose body was found riddled with bullets a few steps from the stage, and who was surely in the wrong place in the wrong place. moment. From this killing, which now bears the name of the place where it occurred, two little girls emerged almost unscathed, Zaina, 7, shot in the shoulder, as well as Zeena, aged 4, who had curled up under her mother’s legs. After several avenues studied, including that of settling family accounts in industrial espionage, a suspect was finally taken into custody by the research section de Chambéry on Wednesday January 12, 2022, announced the Annecy prosecutor.

Who is the suspect in custody?

This police custody aims to carry out timetable checks and house searches are underway of this person, thus clarified Line Bonnet-Mathis, whereas a reconstitution of the course of the killer had been carried out last September, without however being related to new events of the investigation. However, if this custody is a rebound in the killing of Chevaline, it is possible that it ultimately does not give all the answers hoped for. The prosecutor specified in fact that she “may not give anything”. “We are extremely careful about identifying elements”, she stressed. The suspect, whose identity we do not know, is a witness who was exonerated in 2015, said his lawyer, Jean-Christophe Basson-Larbi. Police custody according to the latter who is “not justified”, the suspect having “always had at heart to participate in the manifestation of the truth”, precise Paris Match.
