Changes are coming for Chicago Med: co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider have decided to leave the long-running series at the end of the ninth season, currently airing in the United States, cut short after the writers’ strike .
“We were honored to be chosen by Dick Wolf to direct Chicago Med and have greatly enjoyed our association with Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television. We love Chicago Med and have devoted all of our creative energies to it, but after nine seasons, we feel it’s time for us to move forward and explore other possibilities”, they said in a statement in early April. “We had the privilege of working with an excellent team of writers, a production team and a brilliant cast of actors. We will all miss them.”
Creator and executive producer Dick Wolf added: “We are grateful to Diane and Andy for nine fabulous seasons of Chicago Med. They helped us give NBC a true #1 hit for almost a decade.”
Chicago Med, produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, is one of NBC’s flagship series, remaining in first place in its Wednesday time slot with an average of more than 10.5 million viewers per episode. The third series in the “One Chicago” franchise after Chicago Fire and Chicago Police Department, it debuted in 2015.
Last season, however, the show underwent many changes with the departures of Guy Lockard (Dylan Scott) after 23 episodes, Asjha Cooper (Vanessa Taylor) after 28 episodes and especially those of two of the original stars of the series, Brian Tee ( Ethan Choi) and Nick Gehlfuss (Will Halstead), after no less than 136 and 163 episodes respectively. But season 9 also marked the arrival of two new actors: Luke Mitchell in the role of Doctor Mitch Ripley and Sophia Ali in that of Doctor Zola Ahmad.
