As the national health authority announced on Monday, all cases were registered in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, where 18 new infections were reported in the provincial capital of Guangzhou (Canton) alone.
After cases had occurred there in the past few days, the authorities ordered residents of some streets in Liwan District to stay at home. In addition, mass tests were carried out. People who want to leave the city by plane, bus or train have to prove a negative Covid-19 test.
China has largely had the pandemic under control since last year. There were occasional local outbreaks like the one in Guangzhou, but these were quickly brought back under control.
State media recently reported that 600 million vaccine doses had been administered in the fight against the corona virus. According to this, 100 million people were recently vaccinated within just five days.
