BEIJING (Reuters) – The Chinese government has released draft rules aimed at making it easier for some tourists to enter China for tours along its border.

Trips organized by agencies in China’s border areas will be able to choose their point of entry and exit “flexibly”, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement on Monday, without giving details on the places and dates.

China, which closed its borders to foreign tourists in 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19, only allowed specific groups of foreign nationals to enter the country, such as those holding certain work visas. .

In recent months, the rules have been gradually relaxed, whether it is the resumption of direct flights between China and certain countries or the authorization to enter China for foreign students with a residence permit. valid. Quarantine measures for foreign arrivals have also been reduced.

“I think cross-border tourism will recover, although I can’t predict when,” Yang Jinsong, head of the international tourism institute, told the China Tourism Academy, a state-run think tank.

“It depends on the COVID-19 situation and the effects of virus control measures, which the tourism department cannot decide.”
