The Middle Kingdom now wants to be a major voice in world affairs. And he wants to prove it again with the resolution on the development of AI that he is preparing at the UN.

After the United States, where we can find already very powerful tools like ChatGPT or Gemini, China is surely the most advanced country in the development of artificial intelligence. It therefore has, like Washington, a certain legitimacy to have a vision on the future of this technology in the world. A legitimacy which it will use within the UN soon to discuss the delay of developing countries in this sector.

China poses as the voice of the poorest countries

Artificial intelligence is expected to bring about a fundamental upheaval in our societies in the decades to come. But not all countries are in the same boat, and the impact is not the same in the United States as in, say, Kenya or Bangladesh. Very deep inequalities that China wants to discuss at the UN.

The rapid development of AI technology has not fully benefited the vast majority of developing countries » indicated the spokesperson for the Chinese mission to the UN, Tao Wang. Reason why this delegation will propose the vote on a non-binding resolution at the general meeting. It should focus on issues of capacity development in the AI sector in developing countries.

A way to pose as a rival to the United States?

And this initiative does not come out of nowhere. It closely follows another, which was led by the United States within the same arena, Washington having passed a resolution which called for a development “ inclusive and responsible » of artificial intelligence across the world.

This received a wide response, since in total, 110 countries voted for it (the General Assembly is made up of 193 countries). China itself joined the movement at the last minute, joining the list of co-sponsors of the resolution. Suffice to say that Beijing could not show itself only as a follower, and that it also had to have a message to deliver. Which will therefore be the case.
