MG Motors is slowly making a name for itself. I beg your pardon? MG has a name for a long time? Rather had. In modern times, since MG belongs to the China group SAIC, the name has been re-coined. And above all through cheap SUVs with any optics and lots of equipment. Now the brand has presented a study by a mighty Rodster named Cyberster, who begs one question: do they even know what they’re doing?
Of course, you could say “Crazy, awesome sports car!”. Or “great that they show something that is not so boring”. Seriously? I see a concept car that, in all its exaltation, is just as arbitrary as the two SUVs that are already being sold in Austria (MG EHS and MG ZS).
So it is not surprising that the press release looks like it has been translated by the Google translator. “MG Cyberster inherits sporty convertible shape.” – “The strongly flattened rear optimizes the rear spoiler.” – “The dynamic appearance is reinforced by the two-step shoulder line that emphasizes the front and rear wheels (sic!).”
But yes, a technical term is used correctly, it is actually a so-called “Kammback”. That has nothing to do with a comeback, but rather describes a body shape that flows towards the rear and breaks off abruptly there. This is also where you can actually find the only place where there is anything British to be seen: the rear lights are reminiscent of the Union Jack, the British national flag. It is not clear to me where MG claims to have quoted the classic MGB roadster.
“Arrow-like doors”, “‘laser belts’ LED strips”, the designers of MG’s “global design team” could really let off steam (they say internally), each of them probably a great game consoleist. The covered headlights, which only appear when switched on, are still a nice gag.
The interior with the two structurally separated seats is just spacey. A giant display in front of the driver, a second screen in the middle under the windshield and a third one lengthways on the center console. How a driver should hold the wheel with real hands is a mystery to me.
MG speaks of 5G networking and autonomous driving at level 3. And the Cyberster should also have a drive. Electrically, of course. Everyone can come up with data and specifications themselves. All MG says is a range of 800 kilometers and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in under three seconds. One can wish for a lot. A production version, however, is not one of my personal desires.
