She was one of the most successful fighters on the tennis court. Now sports legend Chris Evert has to gather all his strength for a vital victory: The former world number one has cancer.

Chris Evert, 67, shows fighting spirit. A quality that she has perfected in her long tennis career. Now, however, the former professional athlete has to face a treacherous opponent. “I wanted to share my stage 1 ovarian cancer diagnosis to help others,” Evert shared the shocking news on January 15, 2022 via Twitter, which she herself published on ESPN. The announcement caused a wave of dismay among fans.

But the American is cautiously confident of victory: “I’m very lucky that the disease was recognized early and I expect positive results from my chemotherapy.”

A few guest appearances on TV during the treatment

Now she will first focus on her health and treatment. However, she will report from home from time to time as part of ESPN’s TV coverage of the Australia Open, she assures.

Evert ranked No. 1 in the world for 260 weeks during her career. She was the first player to record 1000 victories in singles. The 67-year-old has been married twice and has three children.
